Our headquarters and meeting place is in Villa Carpe Diem, Lotissement Salman I, Quartier Californie, Casablanca Morocco. We meet once a month from September to June officially.

Membership in this society is open to anyone with a fee of 100 MAD per year. An annual general meeting will be held each Spring to elect the steering committee for the coming year.

Rationale

The teachers at the first school we have helped face many challenges:

  • 170 children attend school in 2 classrooms of 40 m. 2 each, thus forcing the teachers to separate the children in morning and afternoon shifts.
  • The families of these children live in impoverished conditions with low incomes and no access to social services. Parents often need to be convinced of the value education has for their children.
  • Parents are often dependent on their children for housework and/or field work.
  • Classroom conditions were very poor with leaky roofs, no electricity, broken windows and dirty walls.
  • Classroom supplies like chalk and pens were practically non-existent.

Our group is trying to help alleviate these problems through our work, and we are anxious to expand our scope to other schools in the region.

The social problems in the area create high drop-out rates and high illiteracy rates which in turn inhibit social and economic development. We are determined to become a part of the solution to these problems. We want to help make Morocco literate!

AMIS DES ECOLES unites parents, children, teachers and local government to provide a proper learning environment for students and teachers alike. We believe that local communities can and must be empowered to find solutions to their problems and we are there to help them do that. We strive for friendly, pleasant classroom environments that supports the needs of the local community.

Of particular importance to the rural areas we deal with is the education of girls, often seen as a low priority in these areas. Research shows that educated girls send their children to school, have lower birth rates and child mortality, and promote political stability and combat poverty.

A contribution to AMIS DES ECOLES will support the work we do to help children in rural Morocco receive the best education possible.
